Share the Spirit: Lincoln Families opened the doors for one mother to learn English — and so much about herself Aurora Sanchez was confident she was doing the right thing, following her husband to the United States from El Salvador to start a new life and a family. She hadn’t quite known what to expect in her new country, and finding her way was filled with unknowns and isolation. It was daunting. Sanchez, speaking through a translator, says it was “very difficult” to leave her family and adjust to a different country with a different language, culture, and way of life. She felt lonely, stressed, and depressed despite her happiness with the birth of her daughter. That’s when she found Lincoln Families, a 140-year-old Oakland-based organization that works with an assortment of agencies to connect families and children struggling with poverty and trauma with important life-changing programs and resources. The roots of the organization began in 1883 when its founder, Rebecca McWade, known in the community as “a kind woman,” found a young child on her doorstep and incorporated the first racially int...

For the San Jose Sharks, does trading their ‘pulse’ make sense? The rebuilding San Jose Sharks have 10 pending unrestricted free agents, and it’s no secret that any number of them could be shipped to another team before the NHL’s trade deadline in March.“It’s the reality of our situation,” Sharks coach David Quinn said over the weekend. “When you’re in our situation, people are going to want to take your good players and give you future assets. That’s just the nature of the business.”The question for members of the Sharks’ front office will be whether they also want to trade defenseman Mario Ferraro, who is signed through the 2025-26 season and is reportedly coveted by some opposing teams given his work ethic, ability to play big minutes, leadership qualities and a relatively modest salary cap hit of $3.25 million.Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said earlier this month that the Sharks would consider trading several of their defensemen, noting also that Ferraro, 25, isn’t necessarily an untouchable – for the right price.General ma...

PGA Tour offered rookies $500K up front. Only 8 of them needed it The PGA Tour approved a new program this season to make sure rookies and most Korn Ferry Tour graduates get $500,000 up front. That money would be recouped from their earnings to make sure no one lost any money.Tour officials are still calculating the “Earnings Assurance Program,” although only eight of the 27 rookies who finished a full season (15 events or more) failed to reach $500,000. All but one of them are back in Q-school this week. How much that cost the tour is still to be determined. PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan predicted $2 million to $3 million — money spent making up the difference if players didn’t reach $500,000 — though that’s what is still being computed.Rookies had the option of getting the money up front. But the program was for every fully exempt player, which might have come in handy for Kevin Kisner in a strange year. He was torn between bad play and wanting to be at home with three young children during the summer when he stopped playing in Ju...
