ZURICH (AP) — Nearly half the candidates failed a new FIFA exam to work as a player agent in soccer, the governing body said Thursday.Only 1,962 people — 52% of the 3,800 candidates worldwide — passed last week’s test to get a license that will be mandatory to work in transfer and contract negotiations from October.FIFA is being challenged in multiple legal cases across Europe by agents and lawyers seeking to block the new licensing system that would cap fees and regulate an industry that earns hundreds of millions of dollars each year.A second round of exams will be held in September. It costs $600 to take the test and the pass mark is set at 75% for answering 20 questions in one hour in English, French or Spanish. The test is mandatory for would-be agents who were not licensed in 2015 under a previous system.Long-time agents, including some who have earned tens of millions of dollars from the highest-profile transfer deals, can be exempted from the test if they apply for a li...

CINCINNATI (AP) — Jerry Springer, the onetime mayor and news anchor whose namesake TV show featured a three-ring circus of dysfunctional families willing to bare all on weekday afternoons including brawls, obscenities and blurred images of nudity, died Thursday at 79.At its peak, “The Jerry Springer Show” was a ratings powerhouse and a U.S. cultural pariah, synonymous with lurid drama. Known for chair-throwing and bleep-filled arguments, the daytime talk show was a favorite American guilty pleasure over its 27-year run, at one point topping Oprah Winfrey’s show.Springer called it “escapist entertainment,” while others saw the show as contributing to a dumbing-down decline in American social values.“Jerry’s ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried whether that was politics, broadcasting or just joking with people on the street who wanted a photo or a word,” said Jene Galvin, a family spokesperson and friend of Springer’s since 1970, ...

UK denies claim its Sudan evacuation hampered German efforts

LONDON — Foreign Secretary James Cleverly rejected claims the U.K’s evacuation of its diplomats from Sudan hampered Germany’s own bid to get its nationals out of the conflict-hit country. The BBC on Thursday quoted multiple German “political sources” who blamed the U.K.’s attempts to evacuate embassy staff over the weekend for delays Germany experienced as it tried to evacuate its own citizens. The broadcaster said that the Sudanese army initially refused access to the airfield north of Sudanese capital Khartoum after being angered by the unannounced presence of British military forces on the site.In what has been seen as a veiled swipe at the U.K., the BBC quoted German Defense Minister Boris Pistorious as saying British forces involved in the evacuation of diplomats “ignored what the Sudanese had stipulated.”Addressing MPs Thursday, Cleverly said the German government had not raised the issue with London.“It is not my understanding th...

Southwest posts record revenue despite holiday meltdown

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 09:36:16 GMT

(CNN) — Southwest Airlines’ passengers have finally returned to the airline following its winter holiday service meltdown, enabling record revenue during the first quarter. The airline said its bookings in March were strong, allowing revenue to soar 22% to $5.7 billion in the quarter. That was up from year-ago results that were still affected by the surge in Covid cases caused by the Omicron variant, and it was also up from the $5.1 billion it reported in the same period of 2019, a year before the pandemic. The strong demand led to higher fares, as passengers paid 10% more to fly each mile on Southwest during the quarter, compared to a year ago, and 12% more than they were paying in the same period of 2019.It wasn’t all good news: The lingering impact of massive service problems caused Southwest Airlines to report a first-quarter loss, as the airline warned would happen three months ago. Weak bookings in January and February caused a $325 million hit to rev...
